Has anyone had the experience of custom building your own home, either through a custom builder, or you acting as the general contractor? Would you like to share your positive/negative experience?
We custom-built our house in 2000 by NV Homes, which acted as general contractor. Good thing about custom-building is that you can design and build the house you way you want. We did a lot of changes to the base plan: moved the house further to the back, added a new room, enlarged sizes of other rooms, moved the location of bathrooms, added wet bar, added circular drive way, etc. I even totally redesigned the plan of the basement myself. The end result is a more useful house for our needs. The drawback is you may have to pay more, and it may take longer time to finish. Also you probably should be on site as often as you can. Another thing is that you should video-tape the process, especially how the wires/pipes go before they get hidden. In our case, the hot water and cold water pipes got crossed, and it was the video tape that helped find the exact location of the cross. Otherwise, they would have to pull down many walls to find it. You definitely have to do more, but it's worth it, if you don't mind the extra cost, and you plan to live there for long time.

We are custom builders and specialize in the design/build process. This is the best way to build a custom home as the Builder designs and estimates the house as it is being designed. Therefore, the house design is matched to your budget. Otherwise you have cost "suprises" throughout the process.
I am also a real estate agent and can help you from land acquisition to completion.

I know this house
Hi Yan
I know your house well, don't I. McGuire Builders is always there to help the Chinese Community as well as Lyons and McGuire, Real Estate.
Of course you do :-)
Yes, you helped us finding the location and getting things started. I still think this is the best place I can ever find ... :-)
Thanks!
